Microsoft has used the Windows flag as its signature icon for the last 20 years. With the introduction of Windows 8 Metro however, that’s all about to change. Users shouldn’t be surprised by the new logo however as, unlike a flag, the new logo looks more like a window.
Windows envisioned a completely new look for the company logo, saying they wanted something that reflects the biggest departure from old versions of windows but hark-ens back to them just the same. The new logo, much like the upcoming Windows 8, sets a new ideal for the company, one that features clean lines and a more readable typography. When Microsoft came to the ad agency Pentogram, this is what they produced.
Older users will recognize its similarity to Windows 1, when rather than a flag; the logo was an actual window. The logo however wasn’t long on the main stage and was switched with the flag during the introduction of Windows 3.1 in 1992. Pentogram’s Paula Scher, thought that if the name of the product is Windows then the logo should be a window as well,
The point has also been made that Windows 8 represents a departure for actual windows on the desktop and that the look called Metro will not features windows at all. Soon, they may have changed the logo again.
