Science Icon Samantha Garvey Tells her Incredible Story

18 year old, Samantha Garvey moved to her new home this Saturday. Samantha Garvey has become an icon for all the teenage students. The former homeless Samantha had never thought of a life full of luxuries and facilities. She ranked semifinalist in the grand Intel Science Competition and this changed her life.

Samantha and her family had to go through all the turmoil of life to achieve what they deserved. Samantha was a sensitive child who cared about her parents and siblings and the stress they were all going through. She wanted to quit her studies and start working at an early stage in order to support her family. But she carried on with her principle job, education, hoping that someday her needs would be answered.

Samantha’s father was a cab driver and her mother a hospital worker. They belonged to the American poor working class. Despite the income from both the employed members of the family, Samantha’s family was not able to keep up with the bills and they had to end up homeless. New York’s Suffolk County Office of Social Services provided help to this needy family and gave them a reasonable house to move on with their life. This County provides shelter to almost 40 homeless families each month. The county Office states that this need is growing day by day, as landlords demand the first month’s rent along with the last month and a security deposit to be paid immediately.

Samantha quotes her parent’s words “Keep your head up. Don’t look down and keep moping because nothing is going to come out of it.” Samantha took this to heart, worked on it and kept a positive mentality until she became the semifinalist at the Intel Science Competition.

Samantha’s Brentwood High School guidance counselor, Karin Feil, tells that there was a time when Samantha was concerned about her prom dress, year book, class ring and school pictures etc. but now God has been kind to her. Although she didn’t make it to the finalists of the Science Competition, the attention showered on her is a blessing in disguise. The entire U.S. has come to know her. The elite class of the country is now taking notice of this homeless. Now Samantha Garvey has scholarship offers, offers to pay the college expenses of this bright young girl. Samantha laughs that previously her mother used to cry thinking about the black future of her children but now she gets tears of happiness in her eyes.

Samantha Garvey has become a name that would be remembered by everyone. She is here to stay. She is a role model and an icon for all the upcoming students like her. WAY TO GO SAMANTHA!!!
